Structural Design of Billboards & Signature Structures in Nigeria

Structural Design of Billboards & Signature Structures in Nigeria

Structures that stop people in their tracks, designed to withstand everything.

A billboard is not just an advertising medium; it is a structural engineering challenge. A large outdoor advertising structure standing 15 metres above the ground, exposed to Nigeria’s seasonal winds, carrying a face area of hundreds of square metres, and anchored to urban ground of varying quality. These demands require proper structural engineering to be safe, durable, and legally compliant.

Billboard collapses in Nigeria have caused deaths, property damage, and significant reputational harm to advertising companies. The Lagos State Signage and Advertisement Agency (LASAA) and equivalent state regulators require structurally certified billboard designs as a condition of outdoor advertising permits, and with good reason.

Masterstone Engineering Ltd. provides specialist structural design services for billboard structures, signature architectural elements, large advertising gantries, and other landmark structures, combining rigorous wind load analysis with practical, buildable structural designs.

Our Billboard & Signature Structure Design Services

Billboard Structural Design

We design the complete structural system for outdoor advertising structures: monopole billboards, twin-pole structures, roof-mounted billboards, and gantry structures. Our design scope includes:

  • Wind load analysis (to BS EN 1991-1-4 / NBCC with Nigerian wind speed data)
  • Column and pole structural design (steel and reinforced concrete)
  • Foundation design (pad, raft, or pile, depending on ground conditions)
  • Face frame structural design
  • Connection design and bolt specifications
  • Structural drawings for LASAA / regulatory submission
  • Structural engineer’s certificate for permitting

Gantry & Overhead Structure Design

Overhead gantry structures spanning roads and highways impose significant loads on their supports and foundations, while being exposed to vehicle impact risk and high wind velocities in open terrain. We design road gantries, footbridge signs, and overhead advertising structures with full structural analysis and foundation design for Nigerian conditions.

Signature Architectural Structure Design

Signature structures such as feature entrance canopies, large-span shade structures, sculptural architectural forms, and landmark elements require engineering creativity as well as structural rigour. We work with architects to make their most ambitious structural visions buildable and safe, designing the concealed structural system that makes visible architectural drama possible.

The Importance of Wind Loading in Nigeria

Wind is the governing load for most billboard and large freestanding structure designs. Nigeria spans wind zones ranging from relatively sheltered southern coastal areas to the more exposed Sahel belt in the north. We use Nigerian meteorological data and BS EN 1991-1-4 procedures to determine site-specific design wind speeds, not generic conservative assumptions that lead to overdesigned, uneconomic structures.

Regulatory Compliance

  • Lagos State Signage and Advertisement Agency (LASAA) structural submission requirements
  • Abuja Environmental Protection Board (AEPB) regulations
  • State-level outdoor advertising regulatory authorities
  • Nigerian Urban and Regional Planning Act requirements

Do I need a structural engineer's certificate for a billboard permit in Lagos?

Yes. LASAA requires a structural drawing and certificate signed by a COREN-registered structural engineer as part of the outdoor advertising permit application. Masterstone Engineering provides this service.

What wind speeds do you design billboards for in Nigeria?

We use site-specific wind speed data based on the billboard's location in Nigeria, terrain category, and height above ground, BS EN 1991-1-4 procedures. Wind speeds vary significantly across Nigeria's different geographic zones.

Can you design a billboard for soft or reclaimed ground?

Yes. Where ground conditions are poor, we design deep foundations (bored piles or driven piles) to transfer billboard loads to competent ground below. Geotechnical investigation is required before foundation design can be completed.

Can you retrofit an existing billboard that has been damaged or extended?

Yes. We can assess the existing structure and design strengthening works or modifications to accommodate new face sizes, additional lighting loads, or to repair damage.
