Engineering Nigeria’s infrastructure backbone.
Nigeria faces an infrastructure deficit that constrains economic growth, limits community development, and costs lives. From rural roads that become impassable in the rainy season, to bridges that fail under the weight of modern traffic, to drainage systems overwhelmed by urban flooding. The country needs engineering excellence applied at scale.
Masterstone Engineering Ltd. delivers professional infrastructure design services across Nigeria, combining technical rigour, local knowledge, and a genuine commitment to building public infrastructure that lasts. We design for Nigerian conditions: heavy rainfall, expansive soils, extreme temperatures, and the reality of construction in challenging environments.
Our Infrastructure Design Services
Road Design
We design flexible and rigid pavement road systems for urban, peri-urban, and rural environments, from residential estate roads to state highway connections. Our road designs consider traffic loading, soil subgrade conditions, drainage, and whole-life cost to deliver durable, low-maintenance road infrastructure.
- Urban road and estate road design
- Highway geometric design
- Pavement design (flexible and rigid)
- Kerbing, drainage, and road furniture design
- Traffic impact assessments
Bridge Design
Bridge design requires a unique combination of structural and geotechnical engineering skill. Masterstone Engineering designs road bridges, pedestrian bridges, culverts, and footbridges, from short-span crossings over drainage channels to multi-span bridges over rivers and valleys. We design in reinforced concrete, prestressed concrete, and steel, selecting the most appropriate material for each project’s budget, span, and site conditions.
- Reinforced concrete and prestressed concrete bridges
- Steel bridges and composite bridge structures
- Culverts and box structures
- Pedestrian footbridges
- Foundation design for bridges (piled, pad, and caisson foundations)
- Bridge assessment and load rating of existing bridges
Dam & Hydraulic Structure Design
Water infrastructure (dams, weirs, retaining ponds, and irrigation systems) requires specialist hydraulic and geotechnical engineering. Masterstone Engineering provides structural design services for small to medium earth-fill and gravity dams, weirs, water retaining structures, and flood defence infrastructure in Nigeria.
Drainage & Flood Management Design
Urban flooding is among the most costly and recurring infrastructure failures across Nigerian cities. We design stormwater drainage systems, flood retention basins, and channel improvement works that manage runoff effectively and protect communities and property.
Retaining Walls & Earthworks
Retaining structures, from simple gravity walls to complex propped sheet pile systems, are required wherever significant changes in ground level exist. We design retaining walls in reinforced concrete, masonry, and steel, with full geotechnical analysis of earth pressures, groundwater, and stability.
Our Infrastructure Design Process
- Project Briefing & Site Visit, We visit the site to understand topography, access, soil conditions, and community context.
- Topographic & Geotechnical Survey Coordination, We coordinate with survey and geotechnical contractors to collect the site data needed for design.
- Concept Design & Option Appraisal, We develop two or three concept design options with indicative costs, enabling the client to make an informed decision before proceeding to detailed design.
- Detailed Design & Calculations, We develop the chosen concept to full detailed design, including structural calculations, drainage calculations, and geotechnical analysis.
- Drawing Production, We produce construction drawings, specifications, and bills of quantities ready for contractor procurement.
- Construction Supervision (optional), We provide site supervision and inspection services during construction to ensure work is built to design intent.
Why Infrastructure Design in Nigeria Requires Local Expertise
- Nigeria’s rainy season intensity exceeds European design standards; our drainage designs use local rainfall data and intensity-frequency-duration curves.
- Expansive and collapsible soils in northern Nigeria, and soft marine clays in Lagos require specialist foundation and pavement design.
- Construction material availability and quality vary significantly by region; our designs are practical and buildable with locally available resources.
- Regulatory approvals via the Federal Ministry of Works, State Ministries of Works, and local government authorities require Nigerian code compliance.
